Commentary

And when the matter was thus, He, glorified and exalted is He, commanded His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to strive in saving His servants, even by praying to Allah for their reform, so that the conclusion would be with mercy for the believers, just as the beginning was with their success. He said, adding to His saying ﴿Repel by that which is best﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 96], for there is no goodness better than forgiveness, or in the meaning of ﴿He said, how long have you remained﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 112], which has been clarified by the reading of Ibn Kathir, Hamzah, and Al-Kisai with the command: ﴿And say﴾, or the estimation could be: so dedicate the worship to Him ﴿And say﴾, for no one can truly appreciate Him as He deserves: ﴿O my Lord﴾, O You who are gracious to me, ﴿Forgive and have mercy﴾, meaning increase the mention of these two attributes in my nation for their abundance, for in that is honor for me and for them. You are the best of those who forgive ﴿and You are the best of those who show mercy﴾. From His mercy, He has granted success to what you guide him to of complying with what I indicated at the beginning of the Surah, so he was among the believers, thus he was among the inheritors who will inherit Paradise, wherein they will abide forever. This last part applies to the first with the success of every believer and the failure of every disbeliever. We ask Allah, the Exalted, to be for us the most merciful of the merciful and the best of the forgivers. Indeed, He is the One who oversees the secrets and is hoped for the reform of the hearts - Amen.
