Commentary
And when the estimation was: the matter is not as you have assumed, he explained that by saying: ﴿So exalted is Allah﴾ meaning the One who has majesty and beauty, exalted in a great exaltation above frivolity; then he described Him with what contradicts frivolity, saying: ﴿The King﴾ meaning the One who encompasses the people of His kingdom with knowledge, ability, governance, preservation, and care.
And when some kings of this world may act in a manner that contradicts the noble traits of kings by engaging in frivolity with what contains falsehood, he followed that with a description that purifies Him from it, saying: ﴿The Truth﴾ meaning the One to whom falsehood cannot approach in any aspect of His essence or attributes, so there is no cessation for Him nor for His kingdom, so how can frivolity come to Him?
And when the Truth, in terms of its essence, may have a second, he negated that in His right, glorified and exalted is He, by saying: ﴿There is no deity except Him﴾ so there is no equivalent for Him whatsoever in essence or attribute, and whoever is like that will possess all the attributes of perfection, and the qualities of majesty and beauty, exalted above the traits of deficiency and frivolity, which are among the slightest traits of deficiency, due to His being free from wisdom, which is the foundation of perfection; then he increased in specification and affirmation of His uniqueness by describing Him with a description that no one else claims, saying: ﴿The Lord of the Throne﴾ meaning the throne that encompasses all beings, exalted above them in a way that nothing can rival it; then he described the throne because it is in the context of the ruling with justice and being free from frivolity, unlike the context of innocence and the ant, for it is for overpowering and might, by saying: ﴿The Generous﴾ meaning the One from whom the good things that are obtained for the servants descend, with the honor of His essence, and at His rank, and His praise is the most eloquent praise for its possessor, and the Generous is the One who conceals the shortcomings of morals by manifesting their virtues and is free from all baseness; Al-Qazzaz said: and the root of generosity in the language is virtue and elevation.
