Commentary
And when their condition in their thoughts was that there is no resurrection, they became preoccupied with joy, arrogance, merriment, and mocking the people of Allah, as one who thinks that there is frivolity with Allah, the True King, the Manifest. This caused a transition to His saying: ﴿So you took them in mockery﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 110], His denial of them in His saying: ﴿Did you think﴾. It is permissible that it is connected to an implied meaning such as: Did you think that we would neglect you and not give justice to your oppressed from your oppressor? So you thought ﴿that We created you﴾, meaning according to what we have of greatness ﴿in vain﴾, meaning in vain or for frivolity from us or from you, not for the wisdom of manifesting justice and virtue, until you became preoccupied with the oppression of yourselves and others. Abu Hayyan said: And frivolity is the essence devoid of benefit.
﴿And that you﴾, meaning and you thought that you ﴿would not be returned to Us﴾ in any way to manifest the power and greatness in the separation. Ibn Abi Hatim reported in his tafsir and Abu Ya'la Al-Mawsili in the twenty-fourth part of his Musnad and Al-Baghawi in his tafsir from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that he recited a man afflicted with this verse until the end of the surah in his ears, and he was cured. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! If a man who is certain recited it on a mountain, it would move away." In their chain is Ibn Lahi'ah.
Ibn Kathir said: And Abu Na'im narrated from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Al-Harith from his father, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, sent us in a military expedition and commanded us to say when we entered the evening and morning: ﴿Did you think﴾ - the verse. He said: So we recited it, and we gained spoils and were safe."
