Commentary
And when mockery is the greatest joy for the mocker and the greatest humiliation for the one being mocked, he explained that by saying: ﴿Indeed, it was﴾ meaning a fixed state ﴿a group﴾ meaning people whom you have weakened, so their separation from you and your separation from them became easy for you. And you thought that you would divide their unity ﴿from My servants﴾ meaning those who are worthy of being added to My presence due to their purity from desires. ﴿They say﴾ with continuity: ﴿Our Lord﴾ O You who are gracious to us in creation and provision ﴿We have believed﴾ meaning we have established belief in all that has come to us from the messengers due to its obligation upon us by Your command to us with it.
And when the greatness of the rank necessitates the shortcoming of the worshiper, and the acknowledgment of the shortcoming is a remedy for it, they said: ﴿So forgive us﴾ meaning cover, due to our belief, our faults which were caused by our shortcomings ﴿and have mercy on us﴾ meaning do to us the act of the merciful with goodness, which is in the form of tenderness, compassion, and kindness.
And when the estimation is: So You are the best of the forgivers, for when You cover a sin, You make it forgotten by everyone, even by the guardians, He added to it His saying: ﴿And You are the best of the merciful﴾ because You save whom You have mercy upon from all misery and humiliation, by the sincerity of faith, and salvation from all disbelief.
