Then he resumed their response by saying: ﴿They said, Our Lord﴾ O You who bestow upon us Your blessings ﴿Our wretchedness has overwhelmed us﴾ meaning our desires that led us to the evil deeds which were an apparent cause of misery.
And when the implication was: So we were with it like the imprisoned, driven towards it by the devils, he added to it his saying: ﴿And we were﴾ meaning by what we were created upon ﴿a people astray﴾ in that from guidance, strong in the causes of misery, so it was a reason for being led astray from the path of happiness.
