Commentary
And when he was in that state, having completely lost hope of salvation due to the lack of action because he had missed his home, and having reached the point of gargling, he said: "Perhaps I may act," meaning that he hoped to act "righteously in what I have left" of faith and its consequences. Al-Baghawi said: Qatadah said: He did not wish to return to his family and tribe, nor to gather the world and fulfill his desires, but he wished to return to act in obedience to Allah. May Allah have mercy on a person who acts in what the disbeliever wishes when he sees the punishment.
Ibn Kathir said: Al-Ala' ibn Ziyad used to say: Let one of you consider that death has approached him, so he seeks forgiveness from his Lord, and He forgives him; let him act in obedience to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
And when the decree had determined that he would not return, and even if he returned, he would not act, he said as a reprimand to him and a response to his words: "No," meaning that none of that will happen. It was as if it were said: What is the ruling on what he said? He replied, turning away from him as an indication of anger: "Indeed, it is a word," meaning his saying "My Lord, send me back" [Al-Mu'minun: 99] - to the end of it, a word "he is the one who says it," and it has been known from deceit and lies, so it is as he has been known, it has no truth to it.
And when the estimation was that he would not be answered, he added to his saying, including with it all who are like him, for the inability of the group necessitates the inability of the individual: "And behind them is a barrier," meaning from behind them and in front of them, surrounding them, "a barrier" meaning a barrier between what he is in and between the world and the Day of Resurrection, continuing, no one is able to lift it "until the Day they are resurrected," meaning their resurrection is renewed with the easiest, lightest, and simplest of matters.
