﴿Thani 'itfihi﴾ means relaxed and proud, turning his neck in that manner, as Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And when Our verses are recited to him, he turns away in pride﴾ [Luqman: 7]. The 'itf is originally the side and the place of inclination.

And when the context indicated that he is the densest of the categories by nature, he expressed his intention by saying: ﴿To lead astray﴾, meaning others ﴿from the path of Allah﴾, for understanding that, because this is not intended by a sane person. The first category is a misguided follower, and this one is a caller to the people of misguidance. This is according to the reading of the majority with a dammah, and according to the reading of Ibn Kathir and Abu 'Amr and Ruways from Ya'qub with a differing view from him, 'whoever has gone astray' would be in the context of mockery, as has been mentioned several times, meaning that he is so clever that he does not overlook that this is misguidance, so he only reaches it by his own intention.

And when he mentioned his action and its consequence, he mentioned what he has prepared for him, saying: ﴿For him in this world is disgrace﴾, meaning humiliation and dishonor, even if the duration of his being led astray is prolonged. (p-16) It is a right upon Allah that He does not elevate anything from this world except that He lowers it. ﴿And We will make him taste﴾, meaning with what we have of greatness ﴿on the Day of Resurrection﴾, which gathers the creatures with resurrection after death ﴿the punishment of the burning﴾, meaning by making him feel the pain of the punishment by burning, just as it has burned the hearts of the guided ones with his argumentation with falsehood, and it is said truly or metaphorically.
