Commentary
And when he mentioned their acknowledgment of what cannot be known by transmission or reason, he mentioned their denial of what cannot be denied. So he said: ﴿And when Our verses are recited﴾ meaning in the manner of renewal and continuation from any reciter, ﴿upon them are Our verses﴾ meaning the audible ones, due to their greatness and elevation, while they are ﴿clear proofs﴾ with no ambiguity in them for anyone who has insight into anything of what they called to from the fundamentals and branches. ﴿You recognize﴾ by the insight in their faces - this was the original, but he replaced the pronoun with a form that indicates their obstinacy, so he said: ﴿in the faces of those who disbelieved﴾ meaning they are clad in disbelief. ﴿The denial﴾ meaning the denial which is itself deniable due to what has occurred to them from (p-94) anger; then he clarified what appeared in their faces and said: ﴿They are about to assault﴾ meaning they are about to commit an assault with violence and force ﴿against those who recite to them Our verses﴾ meaning the ones indicating Our beautiful names and exalted attributes, affirming Our oneness, while they are clear proofs in utmost clarity that they are Our words, due to the wisdom and eloquence in them which they were unable to match.
And when they deserved - by their denial and what they intended of harm to the allies of Allah - punishment, it resulted in their being informed of what they deserved. So he said, announcing anger by turning away from them, commanding him ﷺ to threaten them: ﴿Say, 'Shall I inform you﴾ meaning, 'Shall I inform you of a great news? ﴿of worse than that﴾ the great matter of evil that you intended against the servants of Allah who recite to you the verses and what has occurred to you from annoyance because of that. So it is as if it was said: 'What is it?' And it was said: ﴿The Fire﴾. Then he began his statement mocking them by mentioning the promise: ﴿Which Allah has promised﴾ the Great and Majestic ﴿for those who disbelieved﴾ as a recompense for them for this intention of theirs. So how evil is the promise! It is ﴿and how evil is the destination!﴾
