Commentary

And when He commanded him to focus on what concerns him, and to turn away from their disputes, in the form of His prohibition against their disputing him, He taught him the response if they committed what He forbade after striving to repel them, due to their obstinacy and arrogance. He said: ﴿And if they argue with you﴾ meaning in something of your religion with something of what has preceded from their lowly words or otherwise ﴿then say﴾ turning away from the faults of their religion which is most evidently corrupt: ﴿Allah﴾ meaning the King who encompasses with might and knowledge ﴿knows best what you do﴾ threatening them with that, reminding yourself of the power of your Lord, cutting off the dispute from where it is perceived, relying on the One who commanded you with that in the good management of your affairs and the defense for you and their recompense with what His knowledge has preceded regarding what they deserve. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: It is appropriate that everyone should be disciplined by this, for the people of argument are those who have exceeded the limits of the common folk with their pretentiousness, and they have not reached the rank of the elite who know things as they truly are. The common folk are submissive to the Shari'ah, while the elite know its secrets and realities, and the people of argument are a people in whose hearts there is turmoil and disturbance.
