Commentary
And when he concluded with these two descriptions, he mentioned a comprehensive proof for them, general for the creatures, in which there is and by which there is goodness for creation and sustenance. He said: ﴿That﴾ meaning the knowledge of His attributes, glorified is He, with these two descriptions ﴿that Allah﴾ who is characterized by all attributes of perfection ﴿brings the night into the day﴾ for the sake of the interests of the sinful and the good-doer, ﴿and brings the day into the night﴾ so that he removes its darkness with its light. And if He had willed to hold people accountable, He would have made it everlasting, and the interests of the day would have been disrupted. ﴿And brings the day into the night﴾ so that he replaces its light with its darkness. And if it were not for that, the interests of the night would have been disrupted, or one of them would be prolonged where it is intended to take over what is imprinted upon it against what is imprinted upon another for the sake of the interests for which He made that. ﴿And that Allah﴾ with His majesty and greatness ﴿is Hearing﴾ of what can be heard ﴿Seeing﴾ meaning He is All-Seeing, knowledgeable of what can be seen, continually characterized by that. He does not need the stillness of the night to hear, nor the light of the day to see, because He is exalted above attributes. And for the completeness of His power and knowledge, He does not fear in His pardon any sudden occurrence, nor can anything escape Him, or the meaning of the decree is: that victory and pardon is because He is capable and because He is knowledgeable.
