Commentary
And when the polytheists prevented many people from faith with these doubts and others, and they could only do so with those who mixed with them, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, encouraged migration. He said: ﴿And those who migrated﴾ meaning they performed the migration from their homes and families ﴿in the way of Allah﴾ meaning the path of the One of majesty and honor that He legislated. It became a context for their migration, and they had no other purpose in it. And when the greatest fear from migration was death, due to the enemies' intent to confront the migrant when the confrontation was realized, He said, expressing it with a tool of delay, indicating a long life and high rank because of migration: ﴿Then they were killed﴾ meaning after migration. He added to it the generality of death as a favor from Him, saying: ﴿Or they died﴾ meaning without being killed. ﴿Surely Allah will provide for them﴾ meaning the Most High King ﴿a good provision﴾ from the moment their souls depart their bodies because they are alive with their Lord. This is because they pleased Allah by what they detached themselves from of what they had established during their long lives. And their fathers before them, and their wealth, families, and homes.
And when the estimation is: Indeed, Allah is effective in what He wills regarding their revival, provision, and others, He followed it with His saying: ﴿And indeed Allah﴾ meaning the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection with His greatness and His ability to give life as He has the ability to cause death ﴿is the best of providers﴾ providing for creation in general, the righteous among them and the wicked. So how about those who migrated to Him! And He gives a provision that cannot be counted, nor can it be contained by a limit. And as the verse indicates the equality of those who die in the way of Allah, whether in a state of guarding or otherwise, in provision with the martyr, the Sunnah also indicates from the hadith of Salman and others, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Whoever dies while guarding, provision will be granted to him and he will be safe from the two trials."
