And when He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned what He has decreed regarding the enabling of the devil in this casting, He mentioned the reason for that and said: ﴿So that what the devil casts﴾ meaning in the recited or the spoken of it from those doubts in the hearts of His allies ﴿is a trial﴾ meaning a test and examination ﴿for those in whose hearts is a disease﴾ due to their lowliness from the limit of moderation of softness until their hearts became accepting of every form and no form remains in it, and they are the people of hypocrisy who eagerly receive the doubts thrown at them ﴿and their hearts are hardened﴾ from understanding the verses, and they are those whose hearts have risen above that debate until they became like stone, and they are the ones who openly express enmity. They are in doubt regarding their matter and in debate against the believers, as the doubts have engraved themselves in them, making them the farthest thing from removal. And when the decree was: Indeed, they are the party of the devil, and the enemies of the Most Merciful, He added to it His saying. And indeed, they are like this in essence, but He made evident a warning about their description and said: ﴿And indeed, the wrongdoers﴾ meaning those who place their words and actions in other than their proper places like the action of one who is in darkness ﴿are in division﴾ meaning in disagreement as they are in a side (p-73) other than the side of the party of Allah by their challenge in the verses with those doubts which they received from the devil, and they argued with them against the allies of the Most Merciful ﴿far﴾ from the truth ﴿And let their hearts incline to it, those who do not believe in the Hereafter, and let them be pleased with it, and let them commit what they are committing﴾ [Al-An'am: 113]
