And when it was in the context of warning, he said, expressing in the past tense as an increase in fear: ﴿And those who strove﴾ meaning they engaged in striving, even if just once, with a semblance of doubts and similar things ﴿in Our signs﴾ meaning those which We have set up as indicators of Us, visible or audible ﴿challenging﴾ meaning exaggerating in doing what they claim would cause Our inability, and challenging, meaning estimating that they can incapacitate Us by concealing Our signs, misleading people, and preventing them from it by casting doubts and arguments, following the rebellious devil, without knowledge, guidance, or an illuminating book, like the doubts of the unionists whose matter has spread among many people, although there is nothing weaker than their doubts nor more evident in falsehood. For this reason, their matter has spread among the people of ignorance. The caller among them says to those who are deceived: This apparent meaning of the words is not said by a rational person; rather, what is meant are subtle secrets, beyond the realm of reason, which can only be reached through exercise and revelation. And the deceived one does not realize that Abu Talib was more rational than this person to whom that apparent disbelief is attributed. For indeed, his poetry is better than his poetry, and his insight is greater than his insight, and his vision is more judicious than his vision. He has seen from the signs of the Prophet ﷺ what there is no more to add to it, despite the fact that he has a kinship that is well-known and a love that exceeds enumeration. Yet, with that, he has persisted in misguidance that would not be accepted even by a donkey if it could speak. This deceived one has been burdened - by having a good opinion of these disbelievers - with a bad opinion of the noblest of creation: the Prophet ﷺ in his saying, "Whoever among you sees something wrong..." - the hadith which in some of its narrations states: "And there is nothing beyond that, any denial by the heart - the weight of a mustard seed of faith." I have dedicated books to clarify their misguidance due to the evil that has spread from them and the harm that has touched them, among them the lengthy and the concise, with no more to clarify their matter and the emergence of their authority. ﴿Those﴾ are the distant, detestable ones ﴿companions of the Hellfire﴾ meaning deserving of it due to what they strove for. If He wills, He may forgive them, and if He wills, He may cast them into it, so they may know that they are the ones who are incapable. This is in the Hereafter, and He will also manifest, glorified is He, in this world their incapacity, by revealing their doubts and stripping the enlightened hearts of them, along with their humiliation, defeat, and insignificance, until they cannot utter a word of that with the slightest movement of their lips, knowing that no rational person would say such a thing.
