'So I gave respite to the disbelievers' means that I followed up on their denial by delaying their punishment to the time I appointed for them. He expressed the length of the respite with a tool of delay for the increase of consolation, saying: 'Then I seized them.' And He, glorified and exalted is He, alerted that in seizing them were lessons and wonders, terrors and oddities, by questioning in His saying: 'So how was My denial?' meaning My denial of their actions.
