Commentary
And the companions of Madyan are the masters of wealth, the group from the treasures of misguidance. When Musa, peace be upon him, came with visible signs and then audible ones, with what no one before him had brought, the denial of him was extremely far-fetched. So, glorified is He, He changed the style as a warning about that, and about those who insisted on denying him, the Copts. As for his people, only a few among them denied him. He said: 'And Musa was denied.' In that is also a great emphasis for consolation and magnification for solace. 'So I gave respite to the disbelievers' means that I followed up on their denial by delaying their punishment to the time I appointed for them. He expressed the length of the respite with a tool of delay for the increase of consolation, saying: 'Then I seized them.' And He, glorified and exalted is He, alerted that in seizing them were lessons and wonders, terrors and oddities, by questioning in His saying: 'So how was My denial?' meaning My denial of their actions. Let those who you brought the greatest thing that a messenger has brought to his people beware of such.
