Commentary

Then he indicated the greatness of Hajj and its actions by saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning the great, magnificent, and significant matter of it, which has benefits in this world and the Hereafter. And since the implication is: whoever performs it will be successful, and whoever violates anything from it will be wretched, he followed it with his saying: ﴿And whoever honors﴾ meaning with all his effort ﴿the sacred things of Allah﴾ meaning all of them, from this and from others, which He has made for Him, and He urged to act upon them or to refrain from them ﴿then he﴾ (p-42) meaning the honoring that leads him to comply with the command in them properly and to avoid what is prohibited, such as performing Tawaf naked and slaughtering while mentioning the name of someone other than Allah. ﴿Is better﴾ that exists ﴿for him with his Lord﴾ who has bestowed upon him all that he is in of blessings, thus it is obligatory upon him to be grateful for it. For indeed, that indicates the piety of his heart, because honoring them is from the piety of hearts, and honoring them for the majesty of Allah, and violating them is evil for him with his Lord.

And since the implication is: certain things have been prohibited for you to do, and certain things to leave, he followed it with his saying to clarify that Ihram does not affect them as it affects hunting: ﴿And the animals have been made lawful for you﴾ meaning the camels, cattle, and sheep, all of them ﴿except what is recited﴾ meaning in the manner of continuous renewal ﴿upon you﴾ is the prohibition of it from carrion, blood, and what has been slaughtered in the name of someone other than Allah, contrary to the disbelievers in their fabrication against Allah by worshiping through the prohibition of the wasilah, al-bahira, al-sa'iba, and al-hami, and the permissibility of carrion and blood.

And when that made clear the permissibility of the sa'iba and what is with it, and the prohibition of what is slaughtered for the idols, and since the cause of all that is the idols, he caused his saying: ﴿So avoid﴾ meaning with all effort, emulating the greatest father, Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, who was previously commanded with something similar when he made the house a refuge for him. ﴿The abomination﴾ meaning the filth that should be avoided without any command; then he clarified and distinguished it by saying: ﴿of the idols﴾ meaning the filth that should be avoided without any command, for when the cause is avoided, the effect is avoided.

(p-43) And since all of that is from falsehood, he followed it with the prohibition of all falsehood, and he increased in its ugliness and severity as he equated it - as the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said about shirk: ﴿And avoid﴾ meaning in every regard ﴿the false saying﴾ meaning all of it, which is the deviation from the evidence, such as shirk that leads to the necessity of the incapacity of the deity and the prohibition of what Allah has not sent down with authority from the sa'iba and what is with it, and the permissibility of carrion and similar matters from what the auditory evidence has established its prohibition, just as the inclination is with the evidence, and for that reason he followed it with his saying.
