Commentary
﴿And proclaim to the people﴾ meaning inform them and call out to them ﴿about the pilgrimage﴾ which is the intention to the House for the purpose of repeated worship at the designated sacred sites. ﴿They will come to you﴾ meaning they will come to Your House that You have built for that purpose, responding to Your call by Our permission, hearing, obedient, humble, and submissive from the corners of the earth, just as they respond to the call of the caller from before us when he calls them with something similar after death. ﴿On foot﴾ meaning walking on their feet ﴿and on every lean camel﴾ meaning emaciated from the long journey of the camels due to the distance and the great hardship.
And since the term 'lean' applies to both male and female camels, and the female is the weaker of the two types, the ruling on her coming is a ruling on the male who is stronger by the first way. He attributed it to the lean ones and said expressing what indicates renewal and continuity, describing the lean ones which he understood as 'all' ﴿They will come﴾ meaning the lean ones ﴿from every wide path﴾ meaning a broad way between two mountains ﴿deep﴾ meaning far and low in relation to the height of its mountains. Abu Hayyan said: its origin is distance downward - ended. Barefoot, naked, they move from one sacred site of the pilgrimage to another sacred site, and from one place of worship to another place of worship, gathered by the call, humble in awe, fearful of the might, hoping for forgiveness. Then they disperse to their homes, and they head to their dwellings, like those walking to the standing places on the Day of Gathering, the Day of Resurrection and spreading, dispersing to the abodes of bliss and torment. So, O you who believe that our friend Ibrahim, peace be upon him, called for the pilgrimage, and he was answered by Our power as a favor to him, whoever Allah wills to perform Hajj from the far corners of them, and the distance of their dwellings, from those who were present at that time, and from those who were in the appearances of the closest or the farthest ancestors! They believed that the caller from Our side by the blowing in the horns will be answered by everyone who was on its surface from those whose bodies We preserved for him, or We allowed the earth to take him and he was torn apart until he became dust, and what is between that, for all is easy for Us.
