Commentary
And when he mentioned what is for one of the two disputants, and they are the disbelievers, he followed it with what is for the other, and they are the believers. He changed the context with emphasis for the one who seemed to be asking about it, magnifying it by affirming the comprehensive name, signaling the importance. So he said: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning the One to Whom belongs all command ﴿will admit those who believe﴾ He expressed belief in the past tense, encouraging hastening to establish it ﴿and did righteous deeds﴾ as a confirmation of their faith. He expressed in the past tense indicating that whoever does righteous deeds, what was hidden from him of its goodness becomes revealed to him, so he loves it and does not cease from it. ﴿Gardens beneath which rivers flow﴾ meaning always ﴿from beneath them rivers﴾ meaning vast waters, wherever you desire from its land, a river flows for you in contrast to what flows above the heads of the people of the Fire. ﴿They will be adorned therein﴾ in contrast to what remains from the inner aspects of the disbelievers and their outward appearances ﴿with bracelets﴾.
And when its purpose was to urge towards the elevated piety leading to the bestowal of grace, He enticed towards it with the most precious of what we know of adornment, so He said: ﴿of gold and pearls﴾. The reading of Nafi and Asim with the accusative indicates that it is in conjunction with the genitive of 'bracelets'. ﴿And their garments therein are silk﴾ in contrast to the garments of the disbelievers, as the garments of the disbelievers in this world were silk, while the garments of the believers were less than that. It has been reported in the two authentic collections from Abdullah ibn Az-Zubair from Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Do not wear silk, for whoever wears it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter." Ibn Kathir said: Abdullah ibn Az-Zubair said, "And whoever does not wear silk in the Hereafter will not enter Paradise." Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿And their garments therein are silk﴾. This is because in the two authentic collections and others from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Only those who have no share in the Hereafter wear this." It is likely that due to their resemblance to the disbelievers in their clothing, Allah will include them with them, and they will not die as Muslims. And Allah is the Guide.
