Commentary
And when he divided the people into opposers and supporters, he followed that with their recompense in a manner that encourages the supporters and terrifies the opposers, in a way that necessitates the command of what is good, which includes jihad for His sake purely. He said: "These are two" meaning the prostrator and the denier from all the sects. "They are two adversaries"; complete reconciliation is not possible between them, as each of them is on one side.
And when he indicated by the duality to each sect among them, despite their multitude and spread, by the unity of the word in belief, they became like a single body. He stated their multitude by expressing it in the plural, saying: "They have disputed" meaning they have engaged in dispute with utmost effort. And since all the mentioned sects are established and most of them have denied the blessing, he said: "about their Lord" meaning the One whom they acknowledge with His kindness towards them. They did not dispute for any other reason at all. Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Lion of Allah and the Lion of His Messenger, and Ubaydah ibn al-Harith and Ali ibn Abi Talib - who were the first to confront the disbelievers in the presence of the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - against the disbelievers among their relatives: Utbah ibn Rabiah, Shaybah ibn Rabiah, and al-Walid ibn Utbah, in the Battle of Badr - they are the most deserving of this verse due to what has been narrated in the authentic reports from Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, that he swore that it was revealed concerning them. Therefore, he, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I am the first to kneel before the Most Merciful, the Exalted, on the Day of Resurrection for the dispute. This was reported by al-Bukhari in his authentic collection, and perhaps he, may Allah be pleased with him, was the first of the three who stood to confront them, the Prophet ﷺ, for he resembled them the most.
And when he mentioned their dispute and its condition, he mentioned their recompense for it in the matter he had previously mentioned. He began with the warning because a person is in greater need of it, saying: "So those who disbelieved" opposing the command of their Lord, "will have cut off" a cutting that only Allah knows its extent, with the simplest matter from one who has no command for others. "For them" now is prepared, even if they agree with the will of their Lord by opposing His command, "are garments of fire" that encompass them, and they are ample for them as they used to strip garments in this world out of arrogance and pride while they were in a state of being. "Will be poured" upon them when they enter it, "from above their heads is boiling water" meaning hot water, the heat of which only He knows its measure - may Allah protect us from it.
