Commentary
And when the evidence was completed regarding the loss of this reversal and the gain of the steadfast, it was clear that whoever hoped for it due to what he was promised hastened to turn towards it and benefited only himself. And whoever does not hope for that turned away from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, reversing on his face, and he harmed only himself. This is expressed in the state of the second worshiper who is on the edge by his saying: ﴿Whoever thinks﴾ that is, from among those who have been afflicted by a trial ﴿that Allah will not support him﴾, the Lord of Glory and Honor, in any of his states ﴿in this world and the Hereafter﴾, then he turned away from him, reversing on his face, for he harms only himself, even if he thinks that he does not harm it. ﴿Let him extend a means﴾, that is, a rope or something that connects him ﴿to the heaven﴾ that he desires, whether it be a roof or clouds or otherwise.
And when his extension of that is difficult or impossible, he expressed what follows from it with the tool of relaxation and said: ﴿Then let him cut﴾, that is, let him create a connection and a cut from it, meaning let him exert his effort in pushing away the decree and destiny from him. And it is a command for whoever moves it with a kasra, indicating the intensity of the movement in the endeavor to go down, which indicates a lack of reason. They are Abu Amr, Ibn Amir, and Warsh from Nafi, and Ruways from Yaqub, or he made it silent, and they are the rest. ﴿Let him look﴾ with his sight and insight ﴿whether his plotting will remove﴾, even if he strives, ﴿what angers him﴾, that is, something that he will obtain from it that causes him anger. Or the meaning could be: let him do what one does when he reaches anger by tying a rope to the roof of his house, then let him tie it around his neck, then let him cut what is between his legs and the ground to choke himself. This is like what is said to one who turns away from him when a matter distresses him: 'bang your head against the wall if you are not satisfied with this, die of anger' - and similar to that. The result is that if he does not endure the calamities for Allah willingly, he will endure them unwillingly along with what he has obtained from the causes of misery.
