Commentary
And when he clarified the two categories of those who are explicit in their disbelief, the more intense and the more explicit, he understood the sincere believer. He turned to the wavering one and said: ﴿And among the people﴾ (p-17). Therefore, he expressed it with 'people,' whose implication is confusion and hesitation, without implying ﴿Who worships Allah﴾, meaning he acts in a manner of continuity and renewal with what the Most Great God has commanded regarding obedience. ﴿On the edge﴾, he is shaken like the shaking of one who is on the edge of a cliff or mountain or otherwise, having no stability. And like one who is on the edge of an army, if he sees a bounty, he settles, and if he imagines fear, he flees. And this is the meaning of his saying: ﴿So if good befalls him﴾, meaning from the worldly matters, ﴿he is assured by it﴾, meaning because of it, and he remains steadfast on what he is upon. ﴿And if a trial befalls him﴾, meaning a calamity, even if you say - as indicated by the feminine form - in his body or his livelihood, he is tested by it and his hidden self appears to the people. ﴿He turns on his face﴾, to prepare for the turning due to being on the edge of a cliff, so he falls from that edge of the religion in a manner that he cannot return to it afterward, nor is there any movement with it. For indeed, a person is naturally inclined to defend himself with every part of his body against his face, and it cannot be from him except after the end of his inability. The meaning is that he returned to the state he was in of disbelief or doubt, returning firmly. And this is contrary to the one who is firmly rooted in his faith, for if good befalls him, he is grateful, and if harm befalls him, he praises and is patient. For every decree of Allah for him is good.
And when this turning is corrupting to his Hereafter due to what he has incurred of sin, and not beneficial for him in recovering what he has missed of this world, the consequence of that is his saying: (p-18) ﴿He has lost this world﴾, meaning because that does not return what he has missed of it and will be a cause of deprivation upon him and the loss of his blessings. ﴿And if only they had upheld the Torah and the Gospel and what was revealed to them from their Lord, they would have eaten from above them and from beneath their feet﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 66]. "Indeed, a man is deprived of provision due to a sin he commits." ﴿And the Hereafter﴾ by missing the reward of patience and incurring the sin of despair. Then he magnified his calamity by saying: ﴿That﴾, meaning the great matter, ﴿is﴾ meaning there is no other ﴿the manifest loss﴾. Al-Bukhari narrated in the Tafsir from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, regarding this verse, he said: A man would come to Medina, and if his wife bore him a boy and his horses produced offspring, he would say: This is a righteous religion. And if his wife did not give birth and his horses did not produce, he would say: This is a bad religion.
