Commentary
And when what has passed of the stories of these prophets and others has indicated that Allah has the magnificent power and the comprehensive strength for resurrection and other matters, and that this indicates the oneness which is the foundation of the religion, and that they all agree on it by the explicit statements of some here and of the others in what has preceded, the proof of it is the essence of these stories and what preceded them from this Surah. Therefore, His saying, addressing those who said to them: "So are you denying it?" ﴿Indeed, these﴾ meaning the prophets whom We sent before your prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, as men to whom We reveal, just as He is a man to whom We reveal. ﴿Your forefathers nor what you found upon it -﴾ ﴿Your community﴾ meaning your intention, O creation, by following in guidance, while it is ﴿a community﴾. Al-Baghawi said: The essence of community is the group that is on one intention - it has ended. And He, glorified and exalted is He, affirmed this meaning by saying: ﴿one﴾ just as in the report: "They are the children of different mothers. Their mothers are various but their religion is one." There is no difference among them at all in the oneness which is the foundation, nor in directing desires towards us, and limiting the focus to us, knowing from them what we have of the attributes of perfection, and that everything is in need of us, and is submissive and humbled before us. So follow them in that, do not stray from them, lest you go astray. And indeed, We have differentiated them and made them [numbered] according to the nations that are diverse in the long times, and We have not made for any of them eternity, [and] for other wisdoms. So We spread them in the lands, until they filled them with lights.
And when the aim was to specify the intended meaning without ambiguity, He shifted from the wording of greatness and said: ﴿And I am your Lord﴾ meaning no one else, in every time and every place, for every community, because I do not change throughout the ages, nor does one matter occupy me from another matter. ﴿So worship Me﴾ without others, for there is no equal to Me.
