Commentary
﴿And Isma'il﴾ that is, the son of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon them, whom We provided with water through the trustworthy spirit as he lived small after he was certainly doomed to perish. Then We made him food for sustenance and a remedy for illness always. And We protected him - when he was grown - from being slaughtered, so his father slaughtered him and exerted himself in killing him in obedience to Our command, but he did not get slaughtered as Our will required. ﴿And Idris﴾ that is, the son of Shith, son of Adam, blessings and peace be upon them, whom We brought back to life after his death and raised him to a high place. He is the first prophet sent from the children of Adam, blessings and peace be upon them. ﴿And Dhul-Kifl﴾ [who -] We decreed him to sleep, which is the lesser death. He would be overcome by it, so he would not sleep or only a little. He would stand at night and not tire, and he would fast during the day and not break his fast, and he would judge between the people and not become angry.
So Allah decreed him to have a complete life in this world, which is the cause of a complete life in the Hereafter. [And he is the successor of Al-Yasa, blessings be upon him, who was left behind to take care of fasting during the day and standing at night and not becoming angry. It is said that he is not a prophet, and from Al-Hasan, that he is a prophet, and from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he is Ilyas. It is said that he is Yusha ibn Nun, and it is said that he is Zakariya - blessings be upon them.]
And when He mentioned them together for this occasion, He began praising them and said: ﴿Each﴾ that is, each one of them ﴿is among the patient﴾ regarding what We tested them with. So We gave them the reward of the patient.
