Commentary
'So We answered him' means We brought about his answer as if he were one who was seeking it because of his calling. This is due to Our greatness in Our power over tremendous matters. This is indicated by His saying: 'So We removed' meaning by what We have of greatness 'what was upon him of harm' by commanding him to strike the ground with his foot, so a spring of water would gush forth for him, and he would wash in it, and his flesh and skin would grow back better than they were and healthier. This indicates the magnitude of this matter by His saying: 'And We gave him his family' meaning his children and those who followed them from his household. We brought them back to life for him after they had died 'and the like of them' meaning We created for him the like of them in this world. For His saying: 'with them' indicates that they were present at the time of the finding of the family, while this removal and giving was occurring 'as a mercy' meaning a great blessing that indicates his honor by which compassion and kindness are involved. This is from naming the cause by the name of the effect, and He magnified it by saying: 'from Us' such that there is no doubt for anyone who observes that what We did was only a mercy from Us to him and that others were not able to do that. 'And a reminder' meaning a great admonition 'for the worshippers' all of them, so that they may take example from it and be patient when they are tested by the trial of affliction and not think that it is due to their insignificance, and they should be grateful when they are tested by the blessing of prosperity so that it does not become a cause of their misfortune. And He followed it, glorified and exalted is He, with the one who caused for him from Zamzam water that remains and is noble, indicating his honor and the honor of his son, the Seal of the Messengers, by the continuity of his message and his miracle.
