And when He, glorified and exalted is He, completed the mention of the one who made the elements that include the inevitable animal for him by his mission, to confirm that, He mentioned after them one who experienced an extraordinary event that indicates that, either by restoration or preservation or initiation. He began with the one who restored to him what he had lost of family and wealth, and He made the element of water available for him in the restoration of his flesh and skin. This is because restoration is the intended purpose in this surah. He said: ﴿And remember Ayyub﴾, meaning, mention Ayyub. They said: He is the son of Amas, the son of Rom, the son of Isa, the son of Ishaq, the son of Ibrahim, peace be upon them. He was from the region of Bashan in the land of Sham. Allah had granted him abundance in this world, so he thanked Him, glorified is He, then He tested him. He was patient. ﴿When he called upon his Lord﴾, meaning the one who is gracious to him in his health and his affliction with what He granted him of patience. ﴿Indeed, adversity has touched me﴾ by Your allowing the devil to afflict me in my body, my family, and my wealth, and he has now coveted my religion. This is because he adorned for the wife of Ayyub, peace be upon him, to command him to sacrifice to an idol, saying that he would be cured and then repent. He realized this and swore: I will certainly strike her if I recover. He was distressed by that, and complaining to Allah, the Exalted, is not from despair, so it does not contradict patience. Sufyan ibn Uyaynah said: Nor is he who complains to people while in his complaint is content with the decree of Allah, the Exalted. ﴿And You﴾, meaning, while You are ﴿the most merciful of the merciful﴾, so do with me what the Most Merciful does with the distressed. This is an allusion to asking for mercy, as he mentioned himself with what necessitates mercy, and his Lord with the most eloquent of its attributes, without being explicit. This was more subtle in the asking, so he is more deserving of the grant.
