Commentary
And when he mentioned the subjugation by glorification, he referred to the subjugation of iron, which is the strongest of the earth and the hardest and purest of it. He said: ﴿And We taught him﴾ [meaning by Our greatness] ﴿the craft of armor﴾. Al-Baghawi said: In the language, it is a name for everything that is worn and used in all weapons, like sitting and riding.
﴿For you﴾ meaning for you to wear it in your wars. And We made iron soft for him in his work so that ease of work would gather for him along with knowledge, so it would come as he wants. ﴿To protect you﴾ meaning the armor or David or Allah according to the reading of the majority in a protective fortress. This is the meaning of the reading of the noon that indicates the station of greatness according to Abu Bakr from Asim and Ruways from Ya'qub. And the reading of Abu Ja'far and Ibn 'Amir and Hafs with the fawqaniyya for the armor, considering the type. ﴿From your might﴾ that which occurs from some of you to some in the hardships of war, not from the might of all. ﴿So are you grateful﴾ to Us for that, so that you may unite with Us and believe in Our prophets; Al-Baghawi said: Qatadah said: The first to make armor and assemble it and shape it was David, peace be upon him. And it was previously plates, and the armor combines lightness and protection.
