Commentary

And when glorified is He, had made the destruction of those who disobeyed Him in the beginning by stones of sulfur, which are from the fire, and in the end by water, which is stronger than fire, He followed it by saying: ﴿And Lot﴾ meaning, and We gave him or mention Lot; then he resumed his saying: ﴿We gave him﴾ meaning, by Our greatness ﴿a judgment﴾ meaning, prophethood [and a firm action based on knowledge -] ﴿and knowledge﴾ adorned with action ﴿and We saved him﴾ by Our uniqueness in greatness.

And when the root of 'qara' indicates gathering, he said: ﴿from the village﴾ named Sodom, [meaning from their punishment and all their evils, and he specified the warning about its generality by uprooting and overturning and that it was in the utmost ease and speed -] and Abu Hayyan said: And it was seven, he expressed it in the singular due to the agreement of its people on the wickedness.

﴿Which was﴾ before Our saving him from it ﴿doing abominations﴾ with men, and other than that from tyranny, they deserved the fire which is the most bitter of painful things, for what they committed from the forbidden desire, considering it the sweetest of pleasures, and the immersion in the filthy, rotten water which We made - although We made from water every living thing - no animal lives in it, let alone that it be born from it, nor benefit from it, due to the filth they engaged in which has no fruit.

And when there was in this an indication of the destruction of the village, and that the estimation was: And We destroyed them after his separation from them, He justified it by saying: ﴿Indeed, they were﴾ meaning, by what they were created upon ﴿a people of evil﴾ meaning, possessing the ability for evil by their immersion in wicked deeds ﴿disobedient﴾ outside of all good.
