Commentary

And when his salvation - he alone - was from those who intended this great matter of wonders, how if others joined him, and there was no sign among that other to prevent them from him, as was the case with Ibrahim, peace be upon him. He said: ﴿And We saved him﴾, meaning by Our greatness, ﴿and Lut﴾, meaning his nephew and friend for having believed in him and affirmed him, from their land, Kutha in the land of Iraq, reaching the holy land. And perhaps he expressed 'to' indicating that 'reached' implies that there is a long destination, for they left Kutha from the land of Iraq to Harran, then from Harran ﴿to the holy land﴾ ﴿which We have blessed﴾ by filling it with worldly and otherworldly goodness, including the waters in which is the life of everything, from trees, crops, and others. And what appeared from it of the prophets, peace be upon them, who filled the earth with light ﴿for the worlds﴾ as We saved you, O most noble of His children, and your friend Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, to the city that We honored with you. And We spread from its lights in the corners of the earth what We have never spread like it, and We blessed it for the worlds, with the rightly guided caliphs and others from the scholars and the righteous, whose goodness in knowledge, action, and wealth has spread in all regions.
