Commentary

And when he presented what alerted to the intensity of concern for him, that he judged his safety from their plotting at the time they intended against him, how about what follows! He said, adding to what you can deduce: So they threw him into it: ﴿And they intended against him harm﴾ [meaning plotting against him by causing him harm] with fire. And after his exit from it, ﴿So We made them﴾ [meaning -] by what We have of majesty.

[And when they intended by what they did to him from the punishment to be lower than them, the people of that gathering, and the context was to establish the matter of the Hour, which is the purpose of the Surah, and the one who is heading towards it, neglecting it by denying it, has incurred a loss that cannot be repaired due to missing the opportunity for correction, he said: ﴿the greatest losers﴾ because their disgrace in this world, which necessitates punishment in the Hereafter, was by the very act they plotted against him. And He did not mention Shu'ayb, peace be upon him, although he had made the fire for him on the Day of Shadow, and it burned those who disobeyed him, because the act of the fire with his people was according to what is customary regarding it, unlike its act with Ibrahim, peace be upon him, for it was contrary to the usual. And a similar occurrence took place with some of the followers of our Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, which is Abu Muslim al-Khawlani, who was sought by al-Aswad al-Ansi when he claimed prophethood. He said to him: Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah? He said: I do not hear. He said: Do you bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah? He said: Yes! So he ordered a fire and he was thrown into it, and they found him standing praying in it, and it had become coolness and peace upon him. He arrived in Medina after the death of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and Umar seated him between him and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them, and said: Praise be to Allah who did not cause me to die until He showed me from the Ummah of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, one who did to him as was done to Ibrahim, the close friend of Allah.
