And when he clarified first that the verses can be a cause for destruction, there is no benefit in responding to what they proposed from it after the invalidation of what they criticized about the Qur'an. He clarified secondly the invalidation of what they criticized about the Messenger by his being human, by stating that the messengers who were before him were, by their own acknowledgment, of his kind. So, what reason do they have to deny his message while he is like them? Rather, it is upon them to acknowledge him when he displayed the miraculous, just as they acknowledged those. All of this is to prevent anyone from wishing for a response to them regarding support with a visible kingdom. So he said, adding to the verse: "What they believed not" [Al-Anbiya: 6] "And We did not send".

And when the context was to deny that the Prophet could be human, and the entire era, except for a part of it, was devoid of a message, either through a standing messenger or through the transmission of his news, the generalization of time was more suitable. So he said without a preposition: "Before you" meaning in all the time that preceded your time among all groups of humanity, "Except for men to whom We revealed" by the angels secretly, without any other than them being aware of that angel, as greatness necessitated specification, choice, and secrecy from others. And that is one of Allah's blessings upon His creation, for making the messengers from among humans is more conducive to receiving from them and taking from them.

And when they had no way in knowing this unless they accepted his news about the Qur'an except by asking those whom they used to turn to from the people of the Book to support them in what they were upon of doubt and suspicion, he said: "So ask the people of remembrance". Then he pointed out that they are not in need of asking about what has reached them over time regarding the conditions of Musa, 'Isa, Ibrahim, Isma'il, and others, may peace and blessings be upon them, by saying, expressing with a tool of doubt, urging them to the higher matters: "If you were" meaning by your natures "not knowing" meaning you have no qualification to seize knowledge, rather you were purely followers and mere imitators.
