Commentary
We said, by Our greatness, 'O Fire, be cool' by Our will, which is not followed by any other will. 'And safe.' And since coolness can be harmful, He said: 'And safe.' So it was thus, and it did not burn him except for his bindings.
And since the intention was to specify him, peace be upon him, with this, He restricted it to him. And since the intention was his life, and it must be, He expressed it with the preposition of elevation, saying: 'upon Ibrahim.' That is, what We intended was his safety. Al-Baghawi narrated through Al-Bukhari from Umm Sharik, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded the killing of the lizard and said: 'It used to blow fire upon Ibrahim.' Ibn Kathir said: And Ibn Abi Hatim narrated to us from Ubaidullah, the brother of Ibn Wahb, from my uncle, from Jarir ibn Hazim, that Nafi' told him: A female servant of Al-Fakih ibn Al-Mughira Al-Makhzumi told me: 'I entered upon Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and I saw in her house a spear. I said: O Mother of the Believers! What are you doing with this spear? She said: We kill with it these lizards. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: When Ibrahim, peace be upon him, was thrown into the fire, there was no creature on earth that did not extinguish it for him except for the lizard, for it used to blow fire upon Ibrahim. So the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded us to kill it.'
