Commentary

And when their saying caused them to acknowledge that there is no benefit in them, the argument turned towards Ibrahim, peace be upon him. He, glorified and exalted is He, began to inform them about it by saying: "He said," denying them and reproaching them, causing them to acknowledge this: "Do you worship?" And He alerted them that all ranks diminish below the rank of divinity by saying: "Besides Allah," meaning from the lowest rank beneath the rank of the King, who has no harm or benefit except by His hand due to His possession of the attributes of perfection. And when they were in a state of necessity because of the breaking of their idols, hoping for someone to benefit them in that, He presented the benefit and said: "What does not benefit you at all" for you to hope for it, "and does not harm you at all" for you to fear it.
