Commentary
And when the spirit of the words is their acknowledgment of the action and their making it a subject of mockery because they worshipped what has no ability to defend itself, this is indicated by His saying, glorified and exalted is He, that points to their disgrace: "So they returned" meaning the disbelievers "to themselves" meaning that they reflected on what they said, and the evidence compelled them to realize that they were upon pure falsehood and that this conditionality, which is possible in intellect, is normally impossible. "So they said" addressing one another [confirming that their condition necessitates their denial of their wrongdoing]: "Indeed, you are" specifically "the wrongdoers" because you placed worship in the wrong place, not Ibrahim, for he was correct in his humiliation of them, equally in the matter and in accordance with the essence of the objective, and that after you worshipped it, and it has no ability, you left it without a protector.
