And when the warning does not leave the preparedness for what is warned of, from the punishment, except if he is strong enough to repel it. He clarified that they are otherwise, so he said: "And if indeed" meaning they do not hear, while there is no strength in them. Rather, if "it touches them" meaning it encounters them the slightest encounter, "a breeze" meaning a light scent once from the punishments of your Lord, the Benefactor to you by granting you victory over them, "they will surely say" and the matter has overwhelmed them from their pride. And its magnitude has occupied them from their arrogance and their zeal: "O woe to us" which we do not see now in our presence other than it. "Indeed we were" [meaning] by what we have from what is in its permanence like mountains, "wrongdoers" meaning deeply entrenched in wrongdoing in our turning away and our deafness, hoping that it may be withheld from them.
