Commentary

And when it was from the signs of the earlier ones that they requested punishment in various forms of terror, and they themselves had also requested that and hastened it, saying, "Hasten for us our portion" [Sad: 16] and similar to that, the thing that emboldened them to this was Allah's forbearance towards them by His delaying for them. He said, explaining that: "Created" and He built it for the effect because the intended purpose is to clarify what he was created for, and the Creator is known: "Mankind" meaning this type.

And when he was inclined towards hastiness, he said: "Out of haste" and for this reason he disbelieves, because if he is opposed, he rushes to take revenge when he is able, thinking in his ignorance that his Creator is like that, and that the delay is nothing but due to inability or satisfaction. Then He, the Exalted, said, warning the disbelievers: "I will show you" truly "My signs" that are decisive and protective, with the migration of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and those among you from his weak followers, and their opposition being in your hands, and making them a thorn in your throats until what you are upon vanishes, and other than that from the great matters. "So do not hasten Me" meaning do not request that I bring about hastiness in punishment or otherwise, for I am exalted above hastiness, which is among your deficiencies.
