Commentary
And when that was completed, it resulted in the saying: "Every soul" meaning from among you and others "will taste death." This means that no one should rejoice or grieve over the death of anyone, but rather engage in what concerns him. This is indicated by His saying: "And We will test you" meaning [We will deal with you -] in the manner of the tester who examines [the one who shows in the world of testimony the grateful and the patient, the believer and the disbeliever, as it is with us in the world of the unseen] by mixing you with "evil" which is the nature of souls, for it is the quickest thing to them. No one will escape from it except for the one whom We have purified for Us. "And good" is a great mixing. [And He emphasized the trial with a source from its meaning coupled with the pronoun of glorification, saying -]: "a trial" meaning [as gold is tested when it is desired to be purified by mixing it with fire, in a great state -] that is transforming and leading you, and only the one who is granted success will remain steadfast against it. "And to Us" meaning after death, not to others "you will be returned" for recompense, where there is no judgment for anyone at all, neither outwardly nor inwardly [as -] in this abode with the enforcement of judgment, so there will only be what We desire. So engage in what will save you from Us, and do not turn to others, for indeed the matter is difficult, and strive, for the situation is serious.
