Commentary

And when He guided them in the heavens and the earth to His greatness, then He detailed some of what is in the earth due to their connection to it. He specifically mentioned the mountains due to their abundance in their lands. He followed that with the sky and said: ﴿And We made﴾ meaning by Our greatness ﴿the sky﴾ and He singled it out by intending the type, because most people do not witness from it except the worldly, and because the preservation of a single thing is more precise. ﴿A ceiling﴾ meaning for the earth, there is no difference between it and what is known of ceilings except that what is known does not fall from it except what is harmful, and this is filled with benefits. Most of what descends from it is what people cannot do without, such as instruments of light, signs of guidance, and adornments whose value cannot be estimated.

And when what they know of ceilings, despite their smallness, does not stand except by columns, and the corruptors can take advantage of it, and every little thing requires repair and maintenance, He clarified that this ceiling, despite its vastness and height, is unlike that. He said: ﴿Protected﴾ meaning from falling by the power and from the devils by the shooting stars. He reminded by considering the ceiling, and indicated the abundance of what it contains of signs, feminizing by considering the sky or the number indicating the type, because the number is more suitable for indicating the abundance of the signs. [And the stars are scattered in the whole -] He said: ﴿And they﴾ meaning most people ﴿are heedless of its signs﴾ meaning of the great and small stars, and the winds and rains, and other than that from the signs that surpass confinement, meaning the sign of Our power over all that we want from resurrection and others [and -] of Our greatness by being unique in divinity (p-416) and other than that from the attributes of perfection, of majesty and beauty. ﴿Turning away﴾ they do not reflect on what is in it of the governance and management by the rising and setting and the proper arrangement indicating the ongoing account upon which all benefits depend.
