And when it was from the magnificent power the stability of the earth without movement, and water was the most evident proof of its stability, and the earth was closer in the mention than the sky, He followed that with His saying: ﴿And We made﴾ by what We have of greatness ﴿in the earth﴾ mountains ﴿firmly anchored﴾ meaning stable, out of dislike ﴿that it should sway with them﴾ and shake, so that the waters would destroy every living thing, and its benefit would return as harm and its good as evil.

And when the intended meaning of the anchors was strength and firmness to support stability and steadfastness, and that necessitated keeping it away and preserving it from [humiliation -] and softness, He clarified that He broke the norm in it to show that He is capable and selective in all that He wills. So He said: ﴿And We made﴾ by what We have of magnificent power and profound wisdom ﴿in it﴾ meaning the mountains with their firmness ﴿paths﴾ meaning wide and easy ways; then He replaced His words with: ﴿ways﴾ meaning made easy for travel, and were it not for that, reaching some lands would have been difficult or impossible ﴿that perhaps they may be guided﴾ to their benefits in their homes and elsewhere, and to what is in it of signs of oneness and others, so that they may know that if its existence were by nature, it would have been uniform, equal to the earth, equal in description, and that its being otherwise indicates that its Creator is capable, selective, and unique in the attributes of perfection.
