Commentary

And when the decree was [a clarification of what is in the two mentions -]: And if they had turned to the mention, they would have known that We revealed to you in this mention that there is no deity except Me. We did not send you except to reveal to you that. He then turned to his saying: ﴿And We did not send﴾ meaning by Our greatness.

And when the sending is not all-encompassing of the time that precedes it, because just as the message cannot be established by everyone, so the sending is not suitable for every time. He affirmed the connection and said: ﴿Before you﴾ and he emphasized the negation and said: ﴿From a messenger﴾ in the sects of the former ones ﴿Except that We reveal to him﴾ from Us ﴿That there is no deity except Me﴾ and he did not say: We, so that they do not make it a means to a suspicion. For this reason, he said: ﴿So worship Me﴾ in the singular. He left the explicit command for the specification of worship to be understood from the context and the situation. For they had previously worshipped Him, but they were associating partners, indicating that every act of worship that contains a mixture of partnership is null.
