Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed about their heedlessness and their turning away, He explained that by saying: "What comes to them". He emphasized the negation by saying: "of reminder", meaning a revelation that reminds of what has been established in the minds as evidence for Him, glorified and exalted is He, and that necessitates honor for whoever follows it. "From their Lord", who is good to them by creating them and reminding them, is ancient because it is a characteristic of Him. "Its descent" is new. "Except they listen to it", meaning they intend to hear it, and it is the most serious of seriousness and the most rightful of truths. "And they", meaning while they are "playing", meaning they are acting like players by mocking it and placing it in inappropriate contexts, and making their listening to it aimed at finding fault in it. This is close to His saying: "Do not listen to this Qur'an and make noise in it" [Fussilat: 26].
