Commentary
﴿Do not run﴾ and he depicted their mockery in the greatest form, saying: ﴿And return﴾ to your village ﴿to what﴾.
And since the lamentation is only for the comfortable life and not for it being from a specific giver, he based his saying for the passive voice: ﴿You have been indulged in it﴾ meaning from it. It may also be that it was built for the unknown, indicating their negligence regarding the knowledge of who indulged them or that they used to attribute [their blessing -] to their own powers. If they had counted it as from Allah, they would have thanked Him, and He would have benefited them. And since the greatest thing to lament over after the comfortable life is the dwelling, [he said -]: ﴿And your dwellings﴾ meaning those which you used to boast about over the weak among My servants due to how well you constructed them, and how spacious you made their courtyards, and how you elevated their seating places, and how you beautified their sights and places of gathering. ﴿So that you may be asked﴾ in (p-396) faith about what you used to be asked, and you refuse with what you have of arrogance and increased zeal and greatness, or you will be asked about needs and important matters, just as leaders are in their high seating places and their splendid ranks, so they respond to their questioner with what they wish in a manner and conditions of delay that differ from the conditions of the rushing and hasty. ﴿Did you not swear before that you would not have any removal﴾ [Ibrahim: 44].
