And when their turning away after these clear signs was unlikely, he indicated that by mentioning it with a tool of doubt, saying: "So if they turn away," meaning they did not accept what you called them to. "Then say" [to them]: "I have disassociated myself from you," meaning I have informed you of my disassociation from you and that I will never return to you, just as you have disassociated yourselves from me and did not return to me. Thus, your knowledge is that there is no reconciliation between us with turning away, just as my knowledge and the knowledge of those who follow me. Prepare yourselves for all that you think will benefit you. [It is like one who has a truce with his enemies and senses treachery from them, so he renounces the pact to them, makes that renunciation known, and does not hide it from any of them. It is well-known that he reached the pinnacle of eloquence and brevity.] Or I have conveyed to you all that I was sent with and did not specify anyone over another. All of this means "on equal terms," meaning a clear indication of a matter of fairness and a path of justice, in which there is nothing of secrecy, deception, trickery, or treachery. Rather, we are equal in it, we and you.
And when it is necessary to disassociate from a person, it is appropriate for them to say mockingly, as is their custom: "You have renounced to us on equal terms, so hasten for us what you threaten us with." He said: "And if" meaning and what "do I know, is it near" very much, such that its nearness is according to what you are accustomed to, "or is it far what you are promised" of the punishment of Allah in this world by the hands of the Muslims or otherwise, or in the Hereafter, with the knowledge that it is certainly going to happen, and that those who turn away from Allah will inevitably face humiliation and disgrace.
