And when he mentioned his truthfulness in the promise and the ease of actions upon him, it was from the place of much that has passed that whoever does [what does not please Allah, He changes upon him, whoever he may be, and whoever does] what He commanded him, He supports him and aids him, even if after a while, as indicated by His saying, "My Lord knows the saying in the heavens and the earth" [Al-Anbiya: 4] and what follows it [of its forms -], [until He concluded with His saying, "Do they not see that We come to the earth and diminish it?" [Ar-Ra'd: 41] the verse -], Allah, the Exalted, said, adding to His saying, "Indeed, We have sent down to you a Book in which is your mention" [Al-Anbiya: 10] and what He added to it from its like, reminding of what He promised on the tongue of Dawud, peace be upon him: "And We have certainly written" [that is -] upon Our greatness, which we enforce is certain, with no failure to it at all, "in the Psalms" meaning that which We sent down to Dawud, peace be upon him.

[And when the written mentioned did not encompass what follows the intended mention of this Psalms -], [He indicated to the partiality by affirming the preposition, saying -]: "after the mention" meaning the words calling to Allah, the Exalted, indicating Him from the supplication, sermons, and glorification and praise with which we began [with -] the Psalms, "that the earth" meaning its kind, which includes all the lands of this world and the land of the gathering and Paradise and other than that which Allah knows, "will be inherited by My servants" and He confirmed what their addition to Him indicated of specificity by His saying: "the righteous" meaning those who embody the morals of [the people of -] the mention, turning to their Lord, affirming His oneness, fearing the Hour, being in awe of His might, desiring His mercy, humbling themselves to Him - as we indicated by our saying, "My Lord knows the saying" [Al-Anbiya: 4] and what is similar to it and by mentioning what has passed in this Surah from the evidence of that from the stories of these prophets, which we included some of their news as a sign that the end is for those who please us, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers" [Ibrahim: 13] "and We will surely settle you in the earth after them" [Ibrahim: 14] "Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah; He gives it as inheritance to whom He wills of His servants" [Al-A'raf: 128] "Those are the inheritors" [Al-Mu'minun: 10] "who will inherit Paradise" [Al-Mu'minun: 11] and in this is an indication of the good news that He, the Exalted, will grant this nation, despite its weakness, what He granted to Dawud and his son Sulayman, blessings and peace be upon them, for what He gave them [of -] strength from the softening of iron and the wind and all animals from jinn and humans and beasts (and birds and other than that), and the intended meaning of this speech - and Allah knows best - is evident, for He began, glorified is He, the Psalms with the mentions and sermons until He said in the thirty-sixth Psalm, which is before a quarter of it - this very word. The explanation of that:

The first psalm: Blessed is the man who does not follow the counsel of the hypocrites, nor stands in the way of the sinners, nor sits in the gatherings of the mockers. But in the law of the Lord is His will, and in His statutes he recites night and day. He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water that gives its fruit in its season, and its leaves do not wither. And all that he does he completes. [NOT-] like the hypocrites, but like the chaff that the winds scatter from the face of the earth. Therefore, the hypocrites will not stand in the judgment, nor the sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the hypocrites will perish.

The second psalm: Why did the nations rage? And the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against His Anointed, [saying -] 'Let us break their bonds asunder and cast away their cords from us.' He who sits in the heavens (p-493) laughs at them; the Lord mocks them. Then He will speak to them in His anger, and in His wrath He will terrify them. I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill. I will declare the decree of the Lord: the Lord said to Me, 'You are My Son; today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall shepherd them with a rod of iron; you shall break them in pieces like a potter's vessel.' Now therefore, be wise, O kings! Be instructed, you judges of the earth! Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

The fifth psalm: Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I will pray. My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up. For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; in fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before my face. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is destruction; their throat is an open tomb; they flatter with their tongue. Pronounce them guilty, O God! Let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against You. But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; let them ever shout for joy because You defend them. Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You. For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield.

The sixth psalm: O Lord! Do not rebuke me with Your anger, and do not discipline me with Your wrath. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak. Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled, and my soul is greatly distressed. And You save my soul and deliver me by Your mercy, for there is no one among the dead who remembers You, nor in Hell who thanks You. I have labored in my sighing; I drench my bed every night; I wet my couch with my tears. My eyes are wasted away from grief. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity, for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. The Lord has heard the voice of my supplication. The Lord has accepted my prayer. All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled; they shall turn back and be suddenly ashamed. (p-495) And in the ninth psalm: I thank You, O Lord, with all my heart, and I recount all Your wonders. I rejoice and am glad in You, and I sing praises to Your name, O Most High, when my enemies turn back; they stumble and perish before You. For You have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging in righteousness. You rebuked the nations; You destroyed the wicked; You blotted out their name forever and ever. For You have destroyed the weapon of the enemy and annihilated their cities, and removed their memory. The Lord endures forever; He has prepared His throne for judgment to judge the world with righteousness, and He shall govern the nations with uprightness.

The twelfth psalm: How long, O Lord, will You forget me forever? How long, O Lord, will You hide Your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart all the day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O Lord my God! Light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed over him,\

The sixteenth psalm: Listen, O Allah, to my righteousness, and look at my humility, and listen to my prayer from lips that are not deceitful. From before You comes my judgment; Your eyes observe the uprightness. You have tested my heart and examined me; You have tried me and found no wrongdoing in me. My mouth has not spoken of evil deeds. For the sake of Your words, paths have been preserved so that my rising in Your ways may be strengthened and my steps do not slip. And when I call upon You, answer me. O Allah, lend me Your hearing, and accept my supplication, O Rescuer of those who rely upon You. Deliver me by Your right hand from those who oppose me. Protect me like the pupil of the eye, and shade me with the shadow of Your wing from the face of the hypocrites who have oppressed me, and from my enemies who have surrounded my soul. Their fat has been consumed, and their mouths have spoken with arrogance. When they brought me out, they surrounded me; they set their eyes to strike me to the ground. They confronted me like a lion ready for prey, and like a young lion that lurks in secrecy. Arise, O Lord! Rescue them and thwart them, and save my soul from the hypocrites and from the sword of Your enemies. O Allah, from near, scatter them in the earth; divide them in their lives.

The seventeenth psalm: I love You, O Lord, my strength! The Lord is my refuge and my fortress and my savior, my God, my help. Upon Him is my trust, my protector and my deliverer and my supporter. I praise the Lord and call upon Him, to be saved from my enemies. For the pangs of death surrounded me, and the torrents of the wicked terrified me. The terrors of hell encompassed me, the snares of death confronted me. In my distress, I called upon the Lord, and to my God, I cried out. He heard my voice from His holy temple; my cry came before Him, into His ears. The earth shook and trembled; the foundations of the mountains quaked and were shaken because the Lord was angry with them. Smoke ascended from His nostrils, and fire from His mouth devoured; coals were kindled by it. He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under His feet. He rode upon a cherub and flew; He came swiftly upon the wings of the wind. He made darkness His hiding place; His canopy around Him was dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. From the brightness before Him, His clouds passed, hail and coals of fire. The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice; He sent out arrows and scattered them, and He multiplied lightning and terrified them. The channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were uncovered at Your rebuke, O Lord! At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils, He sent from on high and took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemies and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me. The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands, He has recompensed me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not turned away from my God. For all His judgments were before me, and I did not put away His statutes from me. I was also blameless before Him, and I kept myself from my iniquity. The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight. With the merciful, You show Yourself merciful; with the blameless man, You show Yourself blameless; with the pure, You show Yourself pure; and with the crooked, You show Yourself shrewd. For You will save the humble people, but will bring down haughty looks. For You, O Lord, will light my lamp; my God will enlighten my darkness. For by You, I can run against a troop; by my God, I can leap over a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of deer and sets me on my high places. He teaches my hands to make war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great. You enlarged my path under me, so my feet did not slip. I pursued my enemies and overtook them; neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed. I have wounded them, so that they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet. For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. You have also given me the necks of my enemies, so that I destroyed those who hated me. They cried out, but there was none to save; even to the Lord, but He did not answer them. Then I beat them as fine as the dust before the wind; I cast them out like dirt in the streets. Deliver me from the strivings of the people; You made me the head of the nations; a people I have not known shall serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they obey me; the foreigners submit to me. The foreigners fade away and come frightened from their hideouts. The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock! Let the God of my salvation be exalted! It is God who avenges me and subdues the peoples under me. He delivers me from my enemies; You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man. Therefore, I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and sing praises to Your name.

The twenty-first Psalm: My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? You are far from my salvation because of the words of my ignorance. My God, I called to You by day, but You did not answer me, and at night, there was no ignorance from me. You are present among the saints, O pride of Israel. In You, our forefathers believed and relied upon You, and You saved them. They cried out to You, and You delivered them. They hoped in You, and they were not ashamed. And I am a worm and not a man, a disgrace among the people, despised by the nation. All who see me mock me; they speak with their lips and shake their heads, saying: If he has believed or relied upon the Lord, let Him save him, and let Him deliver him if He loves him. And You brought me forth from the womb; since I was nursing at my mother’s breast, I was cast upon You. Upon You, I have relied from the womb; You are my God from my mother’s belly. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near, and there is no one to deliver me. Many bulls have surrounded me; fat bulls have encircled me. They opened their mouths against me like a ravening and roaring lion. Like water, my bones are poured out, and my heart is like melted wax in the midst of my belly. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; my tongue sticks to my jaws, and You have brought me down to the dust of death. Many dogs have surrounded me; a company of evildoers has encircled me. They pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones. They look and stare at me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing, they cast lots. But You, O Lord, do not be far from my help; look to my supplication. Deliver my soul from the sword, my life from the power of the dogs, save me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen. I will declare Your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation, I will praise You. You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him! Let all the offspring of Israel fear Him, for He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, nor has He hidden His face from him; but when he cried to Him, He heard. The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever! All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will worship before You. For the kingdom is the Lord’s, and He rules over the nations. All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship; all who go down to the dust will bow before Him, even he who cannot keep his soul alive. A seed will serve Him; it will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. They will come and declare His righteousness to a people yet to be born, that He has done this.

The Thirtieth Psalm: Upon You, O Lord, I have relied, so I will not be humiliated forever. Deliver me and save me by Your justice. Listen to me with Your hearing, and rescue me quickly. Be for me a God who supports and a refuge and a savior, for You are my help and my refuge. And by Your name, O Lord, guide me and assist me and bring me out of this trap that has been hidden for me, for You are my supporter. And into Your hand, I entrust my spirit. Save me, O Lord, God of truth. You have hated those who rejoice in false idols, and I have relied upon the Lord. I rejoice and am glad in Your mercy, for You have looked upon my humility and have saved my soul from distress. And to whom will You deliver me into the hands of enemies? You have set my feet in a spacious place. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am sad. My eyes have grown dim from Your wrath, and my soul and my strength have failed. My life has wasted away in sorrows, and my years in sighing. My strength has weakened by my misery, and my bones are troubled. I have become a disgrace among my enemies and neighbors, and a terror to those who know me. Those who see me have turned away from me, and they have forgotten me in their hearts like the dead. I have become like a broken vessel, for I have heard the slander of all those around me. They conspired against me, and when they gathered together against me, they plotted to take my life. So, I have relied upon You, O Lord. I said: You are my God, and in Your hand is my portion. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and those who drive me away. Shine Your face upon Your servant, and save me by Your mercy. O Lord, do not let me be humiliated, for I have called upon You. Humiliate the hypocrites, and they will descend into Hell. You silence the deceitful lips that speak falsely against the truthful with lies and slander. How abundant is Your mercy, O Lord, for all who fear You! You have prepared it for those who take refuge in You before the children of mankind. Shelter them in Your protection from the evildoers and in the shadow of Your face. Protect them from the resistance of tongues. Blessed is the Lord who has chosen for Himself the chosen ones in the great city. I said in my confusion: I have fallen from Your sight. Therefore, You heard the voice of my supplication when I called upon You. Love the Lord, all His chosen ones, for the Lord seeks the truth and rewards the arrogant for their deeds. Let your hearts be strong and steadfast, O you who rely upon the Lord.

The thirty-third psalm: I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear Him have no lack. The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and His ears toward their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The Lord redeems the life of His servants; none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

The thirty-fourth psalm: Judge, O Lord, those who wrong me. Fight against those who fight me. Take up shield and armor, and rise to my aid. Draw the sword and bring down my enemies who oppress me. And say to my soul: I am your savior. Let those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded. Let them turn back and be ashamed who think evil of me. Let them be like dust before the wind. And the angel of the Lord [will put them to shame]. Their way shall be slippery and dark upon them, and the angel of the Lord will pursue them. For they have hidden a trap for me without cause. They have accused my soul falsely. Let evil come upon them suddenly, and let the snare which they have hidden catch them. In the pit which they have dug, let them fall. My soul shall rejoice in the Lord and delight in His salvation. All my bones shall say: O Lord, who is like You, delivering the poor from the hand of the mighty, and the needy and destitute from those who seize him? Witnesses of falsehood rise against me, and they ask me about things I do not know. They repay me evil for good, and they have destroyed my soul. When they were in trouble, I put on sackcloth. I humbled my soul with fasting, and my prayer returned to my own bosom. I was like a friend or a brother to them, but I became like a mournful and sorrowful person in my humility. They gathered against me and rejoiced. The wicked gathered against me, and I did not feel it. They sinned and did not repent. They grieved me and mocked me, and they gnashed their teeth at me. O Lord, how long will You wait? Deliver my soul from the evil they have plotted, and from the lion, deliver my loneliness. I will thank You, O Lord, in the great assembly, and in the congregation of the righteous, I will sing praises to You. Let not those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me. Those who hate me without cause and wink with their eyes. For they speak peace, but they think deceit in their hearts. They open their mouths against me and say: Aha! Aha! Our eyes have seen it. O Lord, You have seen it; do not be silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord! Look quickly to my cause, my God and my Lord. Be in my darkness, and judge for me according to Your righteousness, O my Lord and my God. Let them not rejoice over me, lest they say in their hearts: Our souls have been opened. And let them not say: We have swallowed him up. Let all those who rejoice at my hurt be ashamed and humiliated. Let those who boast against me be clothed with shame and disgrace. Let those who delight in my righteousness rejoice and be glad, and say continually: Great is the Lord! Those who seek the safety of Your servant, my tongue shall declare Your righteousness and Your praise all day long. The thirty-sixth psalm: Do not envy the wicked, nor be envious of those who do wrong. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither like the green herb. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait on the Lord shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look carefully for his place, but it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes at him with his teeth. The Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day is coming. The wicked have drawn the sword and have bent their bow to cast down the poor and needy, to slay those who are of upright conduct. Their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous. The Lord knows the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. But the wicked shall perish; and the enemies of the Lord, like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away. The wicked borrows and does not repay, but the righteous shows mercy and gives. For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, but those cursed by Him shall be cut off. The Lord directs the steps of the man, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand. I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lends; and his descendants are blessed. Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell forevermore. For the Lord loves justice, and does not forsake His saints; they are preserved forever, but the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell in it forever. The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to slay him. The Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you shall see it. I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a native green tree. Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more; indeed, I sought him, but he could not be found. Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; for the future of that man is peace. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; the future of the wicked shall be cut off. But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in the time of trouble. The Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him.
