﴿For them﴾ meaning for those who have life among the mentioned worshippers absolutely, and the worshipped who are pleased like Pharaoh. ﴿In it is a great gasping﴾ meaning a tremendous breathing at the utmost of tension and relaxation. The soul nearly departs with it, and they are associated with their deities as an increase in their torment, where the worshipped, from whom happiness was sought, becomes an increase in misery, thus becoming an enemy, and there is nothing more severe than the comparison with an enemy.

And when the obscurity of news is something that deprives of resolution and magnifies troubles, (p-484) it was said ﴿And they do not hear in it﴾ omitting the related matter to generalize to every sound. Ibn Kathir said: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated to us Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanifisi who said: Ibn Fudayl narrated to us from Abdur-Rahman - meaning al-Mas'udi - from his father who said: Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: When there remains one who will dwell in the Fire, they are placed in coffins of fire with nails of fire, so none of them sees that he is being punished in the Fire except for another. Then Abdullah recited - meaning this verse. It was narrated by Ibn Jarir from the narration of Hajjaj ibn Muhammad from al-Mas'udi from Yunus ibn Khabab from Ibn Mas'ud, and he mentioned it.
