Commentary
And when he followed that with the story of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, prefaced by a question accompanied by a conjunction, this guided to the meaning: Do you know of anyone similar to him? That is, one who possesses his attributes or something of them with that description, like his actions. And since the answer is certainly: no, it is established that there is no one who possesses any of his attributes. So he followed this established premise with the story of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him. The implication is: Do you know what we have reminded you of in these verses? That we intend what is easy for us, by virtue of our complete power and comprehensive knowledge, to make you happy in both abodes by increasing your reward and magnifying your status, by increasing your followers. And he followed the story as a tangible witness to what he possesses of attributes that are denied to others from the beautiful names, especially what is mentioned here of possessing complete power and being unique in greatness. And that He elevates this chosen one by revealing this reminder to him and granting him victory over kings and all adversaries, and establishing him in the regions of the lands, and increasing the followers, and honoring the supporters, ministers, and allies, and other things in proportion to the difference between the beginning of their affairs. For the beginning of the affair of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, was that he came to the fire to take a flame from it or to find guidance there. Thus, he was granted guidance for both abodes and victory over the enemies, as will be narrated here what he was granted. And this noble prophet's beginning was that he went to the Cave of Hira to worship during the nights of a specific number, and he prepared for that by drawing closer to the truth before prophethood with support, training him and strengthening his heart. Prophethood came to him while he was in its path, striving towards its heights with determination, indeed soaring. And Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, saw when prophethood came to him the sign of the staff and the hand. And Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, before prophethood would not pass by a stone or a tree except that it greeted him, as narrated by Ibn Ishaq in the biography. And Muslim and others narrated from Jabir ibn Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, I know a stone that used to greet me before I was sent." So Allah, the Exalted, stated confirming and drawing attention to the fact that He mentions to him what is sufficient for his consolation and strengthening of his heart, and to rebuke the Jews who hesitated in his matter, blessings and peace be upon him, and deceived Quraysh when they attempted to distort the matter to them and were satisfied with their words to them and against them. The benefit of the question is that it empties his noble ear for listening and his heart for great understanding: "And has the story of Musa come to you?" That is, O most honorable of creation! "The story of Musa," inviting to emulate Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, in bearing the burdens of prophethood and the responsibilities of the message, and patience in the ranks of hardships, and explaining by mentioning what is in this surah of the context of the story, how beautiful it is in the Surah of Maryam, and confirming by what he organized in its styles that it is the purpose of the surah that it makes him happy and does not make him miserable, and honors him against all his enemies by honoring him against the people of his town after their expulsion of him, just as Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, was honored against those who left their land fearful and expectant, encouraging migration for the third time after having encouraged it first with the story of the People of the Cave and secondly with the story of his father, Ibrahim, blessings be upon him. And that he elevates his people above all the people of the earth, and saves them after their weakness from every hardship, enriches their poverty, and makes them kings of the earth, humiliating the tyrants by them, and destroying those among them whom He knows to be wretched, just as He did with the people of Musa. And he indicated by saving Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, by the hand of his enemy and instilling love for him and guiding the magicians without Pharaoh and his people, and the worship of the Children of Israel of the calf after they saw the signs and blessings and calamities, then their returning from it to His great power over the hearts of those who were about to destroy themselves for their disbelief in this story out of sorrow. And likewise, what is in the story of Adam, blessings and peace be upon him, from his saying: "And he forgot, and We found not for him any resolve" [Ta-Ha: 115] and his saying: "Then his Lord chose him, so He turned to him and guided him" [Ta-Ha: 122]. And perhaps he referred in his saying: "And loosen the knot from my tongue" [Ta-Ha: 27] to what Allah has bestowed upon him of facilitating this reminder with his tongue. And he guided by the supplication of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, for the expansion of the chest and the facilitation of the matter and the request for a minister from his family to pray for something similar until the one to whom this Qur'an was revealed prayed that Allah would support the religion with one of the two men, and He supported him with the greatest minister: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. As this proceeded to the completion of what was included in the context of the story of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, here, completing the rebuke of the Jews for their teaching Quraysh to ask the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, about the soul, and what was mentioned with it of details, regarding the story of their prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, which none of them knows or except for their experts, among them that the appointment was on the Day of Decoration, and among them the complete faith of the magicians, and among them the threat of their crucifixion on the trunks of the palm trees, and among them the casting of the Samaritan for the trace of the messenger. For I have not seen anyone from the Jews who knows that, and some of their virtuous ones informed me that there is no mention of that among them.
Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr said in his proof: When He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned the story of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and what He granted him and gave him, and the stories of the prophets after him with what He specifically granted them, He followed that with His saying: ﴿Those are the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam﴾ [Maryam: 58]. The apparent meaning of the words is the specification of these individuals with these high positions and the noble, exalted degrees, especially since He followed that with His saying: ﴿Then there came after them successors who wasted prayer and followed desires, so they will meet a valley﴾ [Maryam: 59]. This was a cause for concern and fear, so He followed it with the gentle address to His Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, with the tenderness of a beloved close one, saying: ﴿We did not send down the Quran upon you to cause you distress﴾ [Ta-Ha: 2]. Also, the Surah Maryam concluded with His saying: ﴿And how many a generation have We destroyed before them? Do you sense of them anyone or hear from them a whisper?﴾ [Maryam: 98], after His saying: ﴿And to warn thereby a people who are heedless﴾ [Maryam: 97]. He, blessings and peace be upon him, saw the delay of Quraysh from Islam and their stubbornness, which necessitated his concern and fear for them. There is no doubt that he, blessings and peace be upon him, was saddened by their delayed faith. For this reason, it was said to him: 'Do not be grieved for them.' It was as if he, blessings and peace be upon him, thought that the intended goal of their response was difficult or that hope for their repentance would be cut off, leading to prolonged hardship and difficulty. So, He, glorified and exalted is He, gave him glad tidings with His saying: ﴿We did not send down the Quran upon you to cause you distress﴾ [Ta-Ha: 2]. So, do not worry about the stubbornness of these people and their hesitation. He will respond to whoever inclines towards fear when reminded and is moved to reflect on the signs of Allah, as it was said to him in another place: ﴿So let not their speech grieve you﴾ [Ya-Sin: 76]. Then He, glorified and exalted is He, followed that with a declaration and reassurance with His saying: ﴿The Most Merciful ascended upon the Throne﴾ [Ta-Ha: 5], to the beginning of the story of Musa, peace be upon him. He informed that all creation is His and under His dominion; nothing escapes His ownership. When one witnesses a sign of whom He has guided, their matter will not be difficult. Then He followed that with the story of Musa, peace be upon him, and what happened to him when he was cast into the river, and what occurred thereafter of the miraculous act and the destruction of Pharaoh and the emergence of the Children of Israel. All of this confirms the previous intention. This second aspect is more deserving than the first, and Allah knows best. The end.
