Commentary
And when the emergence of the calf occurred after it was thrown, it was made as if it was the cause of that. It was said, with the departure from the style of speaking, in disapproval of attributing the matter of the calf to the speaker: "So he brought it out for them" [meaning for those who drank it and worshipped it -]. And making the pronoun for the absent supports the saying of those who considered this to be the words of those who did not worship the calf. The meaning, according to those who made it from the words of the worshippers, is that they indicated by that their disavowal of it and their disgust for it.
And when it was very similar to the calves, it was said: "calf" and he preceded his saying: "a body" so that we may know that its calf-ness is a form and not a meaning - according to his saying: "It has a lowing" - so that there should not be a misconception that it is alive, and a glance should not pass over a belief in falsehood. "So they said" means that it was caused by that, that the Samaritan said, and those who hastened to the sedition followed him as soon as they saw it: "This" pointing to the calf which is in the form of [what it is -] an example of foolishness. "Your god and the god of Moses" "So he forgot" means that it was caused [by -] that it is your god that Moses forgot - by his departure from this place - its location, so he went to seek it in another place, or he forgot to mention it to you.
