Commentary
Then he followed that with his saying, [in addition to what you can understand: he hastened to obey the command in the Night Journey and others]: "So he followed them," meaning he found the following and the march behind - the Children of Israel in their humiliation and weakness. "Pharaoh with his soldiers," despite their multitude, strength, superiority, and honor. They were like a follower who has no meaning without his leader. "So he overwhelmed them," meaning Pharaoh and his people, "from the sea," meaning the ocean, [which is known to be vast; and he summarized it, so he made it terrifying and said]: "What overwhelmed them," meaning a matter that the minds cannot bear to describe accurately. So he destroyed the first of them and the last of them; and he cut off their end, leaving no one of them remaining, and no thorn troubled any of our oppressed servants.
