Commentary

Then they clarified it by their saying: ﴿Gardens of Eternity﴾ meaning they are prepared for residing and the means for it are arranged in it. ﴿Rivers flow beneath them﴾ meaning beneath their chambers, beds, and land; so there is no place in it where a river would not flow except that it flows. Then he clarified by saying: ﴿They will remain therein forever﴾ that its people are also prepared for residing.

And when the context guided and the conjunction was not apparent to indicate that the estimation is: that great reward and the everlasting bliss is the reward of those described, for their purifying themselves, he added to it his saying: ﴿And that is the reward of﴾ every ﴿one who purifies himself﴾ meaning he cleansed his soul by what was mentioned of faith and good deeds. And in this is a consolation for the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, regarding what was done to them at the time of the revelation of this surah while they were being oppressed.
