Commentary
And when Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, was the one intended by the sending [to Fir'awn], Allah, glorified and exalted is He, began to inform about Fir'awn when he came to him and said -: ﴿He said﴾ that is Fir'awn to the magicians, denying them, [and he concealed his name here and did not reveal it as in Al-A'raf because the purpose of the surah is to be gentle with the invitees and to be patient with them, and he is not qualified to mention his name in this context -]: ﴿Do you believe﴾ that is in Allah ﴿in Him﴾ that is as believers or followers of Musa ﴿before I give you permission﴾ in that, implying that he will give permission [in it] so that the people may stop from hastening to follow between the fear of punishment and the hope of permission; then he resumed his saying, justifying and creating an illusion for his followers to deter them from following him: ﴿Indeed, he is your chief﴾ that is in knowledge ﴿who taught you magic﴾ so you did not follow him due to the appearance of the truth, but rather for your desire for something of deceit, you agreed with him on it before your presence in this place, and this is in accordance with his habit of creating illusions for his followers in what stops them from following the truth.
And when he created an illusion for them, he began to increase their confusion by threatening the magicians and said: ﴿So I will surely cut off﴾ that is because of what you have done ﴿your hands﴾ in the manner of distribution ﴿and your feet﴾ that is from each one a hand and a foot ﴿from opposite sides﴾ so if I cut off the right hand, I will cut off the left foot ﴿and I will surely crucify you﴾ [and he expressed superiority by the circumstance indicating his empowerment over the crucified, in it is the empowerment of the one being crucified in his circumstance, so he said -]: ﴿on the trunks of palm trees﴾ to disgracefully kill you as a deterrent to your likes ﴿and you will surely know which of us﴾ me or the Lord of Musa who said: Indeed, He revealed to me that the punishment is upon whoever denies and turns away ﴿is more severe in punishment and more lasting﴾ that is in terms of punishment, that is which of us has a punishment that is more severe and longer in duration.
