And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed about what He created in the earth of benefits that indicate the completeness of His knowledge and the manifestness of His power, in a way that indicates the specificity of the power over resurrection, there were among the philosophers those who believe in reincarnation and others who acknowledge Allah's oneness but do not accept the saying of the people of Islam: 'Indeed, the soul is a subtle body that moves in the body like fire in coal.' Rather, they say: 'It is neither a body nor a force in a body nor a form of a body, nor is it connected to it in the manner of imprinting or indwelling in it, but rather it is a connection of management and action. When it departs from the body, it connects with the spiritual beings of the intellectual world, which is the world of the immaterial, and it becomes part of the ranks of the angels who are close to Allah, or it connects with some celestial bodies, whether a planet or otherwise, just as it connected with the first body, and its attachment to it was severed, so it does not return to it even on the Day of Resurrection according to those among them who speak of resurrection.' He, glorified and exalted is He, responded to them with His saying, expressing with the pronoun that expresses the composite structure of body and soul: 'From it' [meaning the earth, not from other than it] 'We created you' when We brought you forth from it with the magnificent greatness in the first creation by creating your father Adam, peace be upon him. 'And in it' [not in other than it, just as you see] 'We will return you' with death [as bodies and souls]. So you will become dust as you were. [And for the soul, despite being in the highest ranks, there is a connection to its body in some way, by which the body perceives pleasure through its enjoyment and pain through its suffering. It has been confirmed that the deceased is seated in his grave and answers the questions of the two angels, peace be upon them.] No one among you can escape from that greatness that surrounds the majesty of His greatness or from the subtlety of His wisdom. 'From it' [not from other than it] 'We will bring you forth' on the Day of Resurrection with that same greatness 'once again' just as We began you [the first time]. Just as We did in the plants, it is known that this is the action of the One who is chosen, not the action of nature. Once, He made you alive from something that has no origin in animality at all, and again, He returned you to what you were before life, dust with no soul in it nor anything resembling it. There is no doubt that the doer of that is capable of bringing you forth from it alive just as He began that; indeed, the return is easier in the course of habit.
