Commentary
And when Pharaoh was in the utmost of tyranny, and his state was like that of one who would destroy them unless Allah protects them, and he wanted to know what would happen from that, they said, "Our Lord," meaning, "O You who is gracious to us." And when the content of their informing [of fear] was such that it could be denied, they emphasized by saying, exaggerating in it by showing the third noon, to convey the complaint so that the tyranny would come according to the extent of what appears from the breaking: "Indeed, we fear" for what is in it of the potential, "that he may hasten" meaning, "that he may rush" "against us" with punishment before the completion of the message, like one who jumps and leaps to the matter, "or that he may transgress" and exceed to greater than what he is in of arrogance.
